COLOMBO, August 31 (ePRESS) – Asian International School (AIS), a pioneer among international schools in Sri Lankan rowing, made a strong impact at the inaugural Empire Sprints Regatta by winning two Under-16 men’s titles through Sonal Tranchell, Diyan Haleemdeen and Joel Weerasingham at the Colombo Rowing Club last week.
The regatta saw the AIS youngsters produce impressive performances over the 500-metre sprint distance, further highlighting the school’s growing strength in the sport.
Sonal Tranchell led the AIS charge with a fine victory in the Men’s Under-16 Single Scull. He powered through the 500-metre course to take first place in one minute and 45 seconds.
AIS continued its winning run in the Men’s Under-16 Double Scull, where Diyan Haleemdeen and Joel Weerasingham combined effectively to claim another title for the school.
The AIS pair completed the 500-metre race in one minute and 47 seconds, giving the school its second victory of the regatta.
The double success added another chapter to AIS’s proud rowing tradition. The school has been a pioneer in introducing and developing rowing among Sri Lanka’s international schools and has produced talented rowers who have gone on to represent Sri Lanka and win gold medals at Asian-level competitions.
The AIS rowing programme continues to make steady progress, with Head of Sports Nihara Bagoos playing an active role in guiding and supporting the team. The commitment and dedication of coach Sanjeewa Guruge have also played an important part in developing the young rowers and preparing them for competition.
