COLOMBO, August 26 (ePRESS) – Asian International School (AIS) has earned a major sporting honour after it’s cricket captain and talented all-rounder Hesanda Siyapath Vimuktha Abayakoon was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Indoor Cricket Junior World Cup 2026 in Pretoria, South Africa, from September 26 to October 3.
Abayakoon’s selection is a significant achievement for AIS, particularly with places in the national junior squad highly competitive among talented cricketers from many of Sri Lanka’s leading government and established cricket-playing schools. His rise from an international school to earn national colours highlights the progress of the AIS cricket programme and the opportunities provided to its young players.
The 17-year-old all-rounder, born on August 19, 2009, is a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner. He also represents Asian International School in conventional cricket at both Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
The Sri Lanka squad has been selected by the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA), the governing body for indoor cricket in Sri Lanka and a member of the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF).
The 2026 WICF Junior World Series will bring together seven nations — Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
Competition will be held across five divisions — Under-13 Boys, Under-15 Boys, Under-15 Girls, Under-17 Boys and Under-17 Girls — providing a major international platform for the next generation of indoor cricketers.
For Asian International School, Abayakoon’s national selection is a proud moment. Breaking into a Sri Lanka junior squad amid strong competition from players representing the country’s traditional cricket-playing schools makes the achievement even more significant for AIS.
Abayakoon has developed his game while representing AIS at Under-17 and Under-19 level. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable all-rounder and helped him earn national recognition.
