DARWIN, Australia, August 16, (ePRESS) – Bangladesh pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Test cricket, beating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to claim their first Test victory on Australian soil.
Set just 57 runs to win, Bangladesh reached 57 for one in 14.2 overs at Marrara Oval, with Mominul Haque hitting the winning boundary. He finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam made 25 not out.
The victory came despite a fighting century from Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, whose 104 helped the hosts reach 284 in their second innings.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a major role in Bangladesh’s historic win. After scoring 65 in the first innings, he took four wickets on the final day, including Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.
Hasan Mahmud was another key performer, finishing the match with nine wickets. His six-wicket haul had helped dismiss Australia for only 198 in their first innings.
Bangladesh replied with a commanding 426, led by opener Tanzid Hasan’s superb 101, to take control of the match.
Australia fought back through Green in the second innings, but his dismissal for 104 effectively ended their hopes of setting Bangladesh a difficult target.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described the result as his country’s biggest victory in any format.
Australian captain Pat Cummins admitted his side had been outplayed, saying Bangladesh were more patient and disciplined.
The victory was particularly remarkable as ninth-ranked Bangladesh defeated the world’s top-ranked Test side in their own backyard, 23 years after their previous Test tour of Australia.
