COLOMBO, August 17 (ePRESS) – Sea Hawks FC strengthened their Super League campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over struggling Defenders FC at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, moving into fourth place with 10 points after five matches.
Navindu Shehan Silva and Vijesundaram Yuges scored for Sea Hawks, who controlled the game and handed Defenders their fourth defeat in five matches.
Sea Hawks made the perfect start when Navindu struck in the ninth minute to put his team 1-0 ahead. The early goal gave Sea Hawks confidence and forced Defenders to chase the game.
Defenders tried to fight back but could not find the finishing touch. Sea Hawks protected their narrow advantage and went into the half-time break leading 1-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Defenders searching for an equaliser while Sea Hawks remained dangerous going forward.
Sea Hawks finally killed off the contest in the 66th minute when Yuges found the net to double the lead. The second goal put the match firmly beyond Defenders.
Navindu was named the Most Valuable Player after his important opening goal and impressive performance for the winners.
The victory lifted Sea Hawks to fourth place in the standings with three wins, one draw and one defeat from five matches. They have scored 10 goals and conceded only one, collecting 10 points.
Defenders, meanwhile, remain in serious trouble near the bottom of the table. They are ninth with just one point from five matches after four defeats and a draw. They have scored only once while conceding nine goals.
Up Country Lions SC continue to lead the championship with a perfect 15 points from five matches, while Renown SC and Colombo FC are second and third respectively with 11 points each.
