COLOMBO, Apr 6 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s young tennis stars produced a powerful and clinical display to record a series of impressive victories in the opening round of the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championship Finals Week 2, worked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) courts in Colombo yesterday.
In the boys’ singles, Buvindu Jayawardhana showed strong fighting spirit to come from behind and defeat Nepal’s Bishwo Dallakot 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a well-controlled three-set encounter. After dropping the first set, Jayawardhana raised his intensity with aggressive baseline play and accurate shot placement to dominate the next two sets.
Chirath Subasinghe delivered a commanding performance to outplay Myanmar’s Aung Zay 6-4, 6-0. Subasinghe maintained steady pressure throughout, combining solid serves with sharp returns to seal the match in straight sets.
In the girls’ category, Navya Banagala produced one of the most dominant wins of the day, thrashing Kazakhstan’s Leisan Laksova 6-1, 6-0 with a flawless display of controlled and attacking tennis.
Sahansa Damsiluni also impressed with a composed performance, overcoming Uzbekistan’s M. Akramov 6-4, 6-2. She handled pressure situations well and executed her strokes with precision to secure victory.
Dinethma Ekanayake continued Sri Lanka’s winning momentum, cruising past Myanmar’s Vin Miyo Aye 6-0, 6-2 in a one-sided contest. Her consistency and court coverage proved too strong for her opponent.
The tournament, featuring players from 14 Asian nations including Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Myanmar, Syria, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Thailand and hosts Sri Lanka, is being conducted under international standards at the SLTA courts.
