COLOMBO, Apr 11 (ePRESS) – A 10-year-old rising swimmer, Savindya de Silva of Lyceum International School Panadura, not only won two medals at the HNB 50th National Age Group Swimming Championship, but also underlined the growing strength of Torpedoes Swimming Club and the expert guidance of head coach Asela Perera and assistant coach Akash Almeida.

The championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), concluded at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex in Colombo last Monday, bringing together over 1,000 swimmer of the country’s top young swimmers.

Savindya, competing in the Under-11 category, delivered a composed and technically sound performance across the five-day meet. Training at the Torpedoes Swimming Club in Bandaragama, she continues to benefit from a structured programme that focuses on discipline, technique and race awareness from a young age.

Head coach Asela Perera, a former national record holder who represented Sri Lanka at the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona in 2003, has played a key role in shaping Savindya’s progress. With the support of assistant coach Akash, the club has built a strong pathway for young swimmers to develop into competitive athletes.

In a highly competitive field, Savindya secured a silver medal in the 50m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle, while also finishing fifth in the 50m breaststroke. Her consistent performances across multiple strokes reflected both his natural ability and the quality of training he receives.

The success also highlights the growing reputation of Torpedoes Swimming Club as a nurturing ground for emerging talent. With experienced coaching and a focused training environment, the club continues to produce swimmers capable of performing at national level from a young age.

Savindya’s latest achievements add to her impressive record. At the Inter-International Schools Swimming Championship last November, she won a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke and a silver medal in the 50m backstroke in the Under-10 category.

With strong guidance from her coaches and a solid foundation built at Torpedoes Swimming Club, Savindya de Silva is steadily developing into one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young swimmers, with the potential to make an even bigger impact in the future.
