NUWARA ELIYA, May 14 (ePRESS) – Abhiman Abeywardena of Lyceum International School Anuradhapura emerged as the runaway champion of the Boys’ Copper Division at the Prima Sunrise Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship 2026 with a superb nine-stroke victory at the historic Nuwara Eliya Golf Club recently.
The 10-year-old junior golfer representing Golf Club Anuradhapura (GCA) produced outstanding rounds of 36, 36 and a brilliant final round of 32 to finish with a commanding gross aggregate of 104 in the 10-and-Under category.
The manner of Abhiman’s victory attracted significant attention as the young golfer displayed remarkable composure, consistency and maturity throughout the three-day tournament. While many players struggled to maintain steady performances on the demanding hill country course, Abhiman improved round after round and completed the championship with the best score of the division in the final round.
His impressive performance at one of Sri Lanka’s most challenging golf courses highlighted not only his technical ability but also his strong mental strength. The cool climate, tricky greens and changing winds at Nuwara Eliya often test even experienced golfers, yet Abhiman handled the conditions with confidence beyond his years.
The final round score of 32 proved to be the defining moment of the tournament. It demonstrated his ability to raise his standard when it mattered most, a quality often associated with future champions. His nine-shot winning margin over runner-up Dihein JR Witharana reflected the level of control he maintained throughout the event. Witharana finished second with a total of 113, while Thisura Nayana Premarathana claimed third place with 115.
Sri Lanka Golf’s junior development programme continues to produce talented young golfers, and Abhiman’s latest triumph has now placed him among the country’s most exciting junior prospects. His steady rise in the sport is already drawing attention within local golfing circles, with many believing he possesses the qualities required to become a future national player.
