GOA, India, May 28 (ePRESS) – Bhutan women handed Sri Lanka women’s football team a crushing 4-0 defeat in their opening match of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship 2026 played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, India after leading 1-0 at half time.

With this thumping victory, the Dragon Girls made a strong start to their regional campaign with three valuable points.

Sri Lanka women fought hard in the first half and restricted Bhutan to a narrow 1-0 lead at the break, but Bhutan dominated the second half to complete an emphatic victory in the Group ‘A’ encounter.

Bhutan showed better control and attacking power throughout the match and constantly troubled the Sri Lankan defence with fast counter attacks and accurate passing movements.

Sri Lanka struggled to create scoring opportunities despite showing determination in midfield, while Bhutan capitalised on defensive lapses to add three more goals after halftime and seal a comfortable win.
