COLOMBO, June 11 (ePRESS) – The Vision Care Colombo Tennis Championships 2026, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious ‘A’ Grade tennis tournaments, will begin on June 19 (Friday) at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) clay courts in Colombo, featuring a record number of entries and the largest prize pool in the tournament’s history worth Rs. 3 million.
The three-week tournament, organised by the SLTA Playing Section, is expected to attract top players from across the country and further strengthen the development of local tennis talent.
Speaking at the official launch, SLTA Playing Section President Sria Minasinghe said the championship has remained one of the most important events on the local tennis calendar and continues to provide a valuable platform for emerging players.
“This is one of the oldest ‘A’ Grade tournaments in Sri Lanka. We are honoured to host it once again on our six clay courts, especially with a record number of entries this year,” Minasinghe said.
He noted that the tournament’s main objective is to nurture young talent and create opportunities for players from all parts of the country, including regions such as Ampara and Matara.
“Our goal is to inspire the next generation of tennis players and help them progress to higher levels of competition. We want more Sri Lankan players to compete successfully on the regional stage,” he added.
SLTA Playing Section Captain Prashanth Dissanayake highlighted the governing body’s long-term vision to transform the event into an internationally recognised tournament.
“Last year we offered Rs. 2.5 million in prize money, and this year the prize fund has increased significantly. We believe greater investment will raise the standard of competition and strengthen Sri Lankan tennis,” Dissanayake said.
He revealed plans to develop the championship into a premier South Asian event in the future.
“We dream of this becoming the ‘Colombo Open’—a flagship tournament that attracts the best players from South Asia. This is not only about tennis; it is about building a sporting identity for Sri Lanka,” he said.
The championship will feature a wide range of events, including Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Junior Singles and Doubles competitions from Under-12 to Under-18 age categories, and several Senior events for players above 35 years.
Vision Care will continue as the title sponsor for the 12th consecutive year, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to Sri Lankan tennis.
Vision Care Optical Services Managing Director Janaka Fonseka said the company remains proud to support an event that promotes both sporting excellence and healthy lifestyles.
“We believe sport is vital for the health of the nation and are strongly committed to supporting the Colombo Championships. The objectives of this tournament align closely with our corporate values, and we are pleased to be part of this wonderful event,” Fonseka said.
The tournament will also receive support from Wilson as the Official Ball Partner, while Voice of Asia, Siyatha TV, and Kiss FM will serve as official media partners.
With record participation, increased prize money and ambitious plans for future growth, the Vision Care Colombo Tennis Championships 2026 is set to become one of the biggest and most significant tennis events in Sri Lanka.
