COLOMBO, June 11 (ePRESS) – Sri Lankan javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga has reached a historic milestone by climbing to World No. 3 in the latest world rankings, becoming Asia’s highest-ranked javelin thrower and the highest-ranked Sri Lankan male athlete in athletics history.
The 23-year-old star now holds 1,324 ranking points and has moved ahead of Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra to claim the No. 1 position in Asia.
Tharanga’s remarkable rise comes after a sensational season in which he consistently produced world-class performances against some of the best athletes in the sport.
The Sri Lankan athlete grabbed international attention earlier this month when he shattered the national record with a stunning throw of 92.62 metres at the prestigious Diamond League meeting in Rome. The effort placed him among the world’s elite javelin throwers and strengthened his position among the leading contenders for major global titles.
His latest ranking achievement is another landmark moment for Sri Lankan athletics, highlighting the rapid progress he has made over the past year.
