COLOMBO, June 11 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s young women’s tennis team will begin their campaign at the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Asia/Oceania Group II in Kuala Lumpur on June 15, aiming to secure promotion to the higher Group I competition next year.
A total of 10 nations will compete in the prestigious team event at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The participating countries are Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Pacific Oceania, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.
The tournament will be played in a round-robin format from June 15 to 19, with the teams divided into two groups of five. The play-offs are scheduled for June 20.
The stakes are high, with the two top-performing nations earning promotion to the Asia/Oceania Group I competition in 2027. The relegated teams will drop to Asia/Oceania Group III for the following season.
Sri Lanka will field a promising squad led by captain Dineshkanthan Thangarajah. The team comprises Dinara De Silva, Yuhansa Peiris, Akeesha Silva, Annaya Norbet and Sandithi Usgoda Arachchi.
Dinara and Yuhansa head into the tournament in excellent form after producing impressive performances on the local and international junior circuits. Their experience is expected to play a key role as Sri Lanka seeks success against some of Asia’s strongest emerging tennis nations.
Sri Lanka will be looking to make a strong start in Kuala Lumpur and keep alive their hopes of securing a place in the Asia/Oceania Group I competition in 2027.
