Colombo, Jan 25, 5.45PM – Sri Lanka has clinched spots in two finals at the ongoing ITF Junior Circuit Tennis Tournament, with Methvan Wijemanne securing places in both Boys Singles and Boys Doubles alongside Vichinthaya Nilaweera.
In the Boys Singles semi-final, Wijemanne delivered a strong performance, defeating Devesh Sarawan of Malaysia 2-0 in a hard-fought match lasting two hours and 10 minutes. Wijemanne’s victory earned him a spot in the crucial Boys Singles final, scheduled for Friday, as Sri Lanka aims for glory.
Wijemanne, a left-handed player, exhibited a powerful attack with numerous groundstrokes and excellent serves, leaving little opportunity for his opponent to counter. He claimed the first set 6-3 and dominated the second set, securing an early lead of 5-1 and ultimately winning 6-2 for a straight two-set victory. Wijemanne displayed impressive groundstrokes, engaged in long rallies, and effectively attacked and finished at the net.
In the Boys Doubles, Wijemanne partnered with Vichinthaya Nilaweera to reach the final, defeating Hung Jui Chen and Shang En Kao of Chinese Taipei with a score of 6-2, 6-3. This victory sets the stage for two finals for Sri Lanka on Friday.
Unfortunately, in the morning session, two other Sri Lankan players faced defeats in the Singles semi-finals. Dinara de Silva was defeated by Seo Yun Choi of Korea with a score of 2-0 (6-3, 7-5), while Vichinthaya Nilaweera suffered a 2-0 defeat to Kevin Titus Suresh of India (6/1, 6/2).
In the Girls Singles semi-final, Siyoen Sim of Korea secured a 2-1 victory over Jialan Cai of China (3/6, 7/5, 6/4).
Looking ahead to today’s action, the Boys Singles final will see the eighth-seeded Methvan Wijemanne facing India’s Kevin Titus Suresh, seeded seventh, in a match scheduled at 9 AM. Additionally, the Sri Lankan pair of Wijemanne and Nilaweera will compete in the Doubles final at 1 PM, promising an exciting day of tennis in Colombo.
