Sujan Perera leads Sri Lanka into FIFA Series as captain amid high expectations

Colombo, Mar 21, 3.40PM – In exciting news for Sri Lankan football fans, Sujan Perera has been named as the captain of the Sri Lanka team for the upcoming four-nation FIFA Series, which kicks off Friday, March 22, at the Racecourse grounds in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s first match is against Papua New Guinea, with the action starting at 8:45 PM under the bright floodlights.

This appointment comes following an injury to the team’s captain, Charitha Ratnayake. Perera, aged 31 and an alumnus of Holy Cross College Kalutara, brings experience to the role, having previously served as Sri Lanka’s captain on multiple occasions.

Announcing the decision, Sri Lanka Football stated that the captain’s armband has been rightfully awarded to Senior Custodian Sujan Perera for the FIFA Series. Sri Lanka Football is eager to see Perera lead the team in this prestigious tournament.

In the FIFA Series, Sri Lanka is scheduled to play two floodlit matches. After the opener against Papua New Guinea on March 22, they will face Bhutan on March 25, with both matches kicking off at 8:45 PM. The tournament also features teams from Central African Republic, making it a thrilling four-nation competition.

Prior to the commencement of the series, a crucial Match Coordination Meeting took place today (Thursday) at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Various key figures, including FIFA Match Commissioner Jorge Diaz Cidoncha Garcia, Asif Ansar, Deputy General Secretary of FFSL and General Coordinator for FIFA Series 2024, Prince Rufus, FIFA’s Lead for South Asia Scott Noel Woodford, and representatives from the participating teams, including Bhutan, Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka, were in attendance.
