Reshan Algama masters the pressure to lift SLG July Ranking Title

Reshan Algama 12 1

DIGANA, Kandy, July 13, 2025 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s top World Amateur Golf Rank (WAGR) junior golfer Reshan Algama once again proved why he is considered one of the brightest young stars in the country’s golfing history. Competing against some of the country’s top amateur players, the 17-year-old held his nerve and class to claim a superb even-par victory at the July edition of the Sri Lanka Golf Ranking Tournament, which concluded on Friday at the Victoria Golf Resort in Digana, Kandy on Friday.

Reshan, a student of Colombo International School, led the tournament from the opening round and never looked back. His total score of even-par 288 over four rounds showcased excellent consistency on a demanding course where many experienced golfers struggled. In the final round, under pressure, he carded a steady gross score of 72, highlighting the calmness and maturity beyond his years.

Haroon Aslam and Kumara Dhanushan, made strong attempts to chase him down. Haroon, a seasoned competitor, also produced an even-par final round, finishing five shots behind at 293. Dhanushan took third place with a total of 298, but the gap between the champion and the rest spoke volumes about the control Algama maintained throughout the week.

What made this win particularly special was that Reshan is still a junior player, facing much older and more experienced amateur golfers. Yet, his performance remained flawless — never surrendering his lead and displaying precision in every round. His steady short game and wise decision-making under pressure helped him handle tough conditions, especially during the final two rounds when the course played firm and testing.

Speaking after his triumph, the modest young champion said, “I just wanted to stay focused and stick to the basics. My short game helped me stay in control, and I didn’t try to force anything. I’m happy with the way I closed it out.”

The tournament leaderboard saw several swings throughout the four days. Chanaka Perera staged a fine final-round 72 to finish fourth on 299, while experienced campaigner Vijitha Bandara closed on 301. Another notable performance came from triple champion this year Sri Lanka Navy’s Chalitha Pushpika, whose final-round 71 — the joint-best round of the final day — lifted him to joint sixth alongside P Hemantha on 302.

Jevahn Sathasivam, the reigning Sri Lanka Amateur and Junior Match Play Champion, had a mixed outing. After a steady start, he faded in the final round with an 89, finishing on 324.

Meanwhile, in the Pro Golf-sponsored two-day Junior Ranking Tournament held alongside the main event, Kian Niyarepola topped the boys’ overall category with a total of 164. Thejas Rathiskanth and Janeesh Weerasinghe finished closely behind on 165. Sithara Lorance produced a fine performance in the girls’ category, winning with a total of 183, ahead of Genuli Weerakoon on 194.
