Algama’s composed 74 keeps him in MEDCO title race

Reshan Algama 5 1

JAKARTA, July 15 (ePRESS) — Sri Lanka’s top ranked junior golfer Reshan Algama produced a steady and confident performance on the opening day of the prestigious MEDCO Pondok Indah International Amateur Golf Championship 2025 in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old, one of the brightest young prospects in Asian golf, carded a two-over-par 74 in the first round. It placed him tied for 13th in a strong international field of 78 top amateur golfers from across the world.

The calm and focused display by Algama kept him well within reach of the leaders, with just five strokes separating him from the top of the leaderboard. With two more crucial rounds to play, the young Sri Lankan remains firmly in contention for a top finish in one of Asia’s most respected amateur tournaments.

At the top, Indonesian duo Jantha Xavier and William Justin delighted the home crowd by carding superb three-under-par 69s to take the early lead. Close behind them, Malaysia’s Rizq Adam and local talents Randy Arbenata and Kifta Aftar shot two-under 70s, setting up a thrilling battle as the championship moves into the second day.

While Algama gave Sri Lanka hope of a big result, the other Sri Lankan golfers faced mixed fortunes on a demanding Pondok Indah course.

Haroon Aslam shot a four-over-par 76, keeping himself safely within the projected cut line for the top 54 players after round two. Youngster Jacob Norton finished with a nine-over 81, tied for 41st, while Sachin De Silva returned a 10-over 82, placing him tied for 53rd. Both players, however, remain in contention to make the final round if they can produce solid second-day scores.

This year’s MEDCO Pondok Indah Championship has attracted some of the finest young amateur players from the USA, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other parts of Asia. The tough conditions and high-quality field have made it one of the most exciting and competitive events on the regional golf calendar.
