COLOMBO, August 5, 2025 (ePRESS) – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will travel to Japan in October to attend Expo 2025 Osaka, in a move aimed at boosting Sri Lanka’s global trade profile.
The six-month-long world exposition, which began on April 13, will conclude on October 13, 2025. Held once every four years, the Expo is a major international platform for business, innovation, and diplomacy. Japan is hosting the current edition.
“President AKD will lead the Sri Lanka business delegation to the Expo, which is being coordinated by the Export Development Board (EDB),” said Mahen Kariyawasam, Immediate Past President of the Sri Lanka–Japan Business Council, at the Council’s Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday at Hilton Residences in Colombo.
Sri Lanka has already been taking part in the Expo through various companies and state institutions, which have been participating at the national pavilion in stages since April.
The last World Expo was hosted by Dubai in 2021, where Sri Lanka also showcased its trade and investment potential.
Kariyawasam added that discussions are underway for a bold new initiative: the Japan–Sri Lanka–South India Industrial Corridor. The proposed plan aims to improve regional infrastructure and promote stronger economic partnerships, especially around the Colombo Port.
“This trilateral cooperation between Japan, India, and Sri Lanka could be a game changer for regional trade,” Kariyawasam said. “Sri Lanka must seize this opportunity to work with both countries and gain maximum economic benefits.”
At the AGM, Athula Edirisinghe was elected as the new President of the Sri Lanka–Japan Business Council.
