COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, August 16, 2025 (ePRESS) – Vidullanka PLC has strengthened Sri Lanka’s renewable energy drive by commissioning the second phase of its Horana Solar Power Plant, adding 2 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to the national grid.

The new plant, built by subsidiary Vidul Solar Power (Pvt) Ltd, has an AC capacity of 2 MW and a DC capacity of 2.5 MW. It is expected to generate about 3.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity every year, helping to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The inauguration ceremony took place today (16) with Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody, senior officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Sustainable Energy Authority, and other stakeholders.

With this milestone, Vidullanka now operates 23 power plants with a total installed capacity of 63 MW, reinforcing its position as a leader in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector.

Phase II of the Horana project was awarded under the government’s 150 MW solar tender. Commissioned in June 2023, it became one of only two projects in the program to reach completion, alongside the Vavunathivu Solar Plant, also co-developed by Vidullanka.

Vidullanka’s Chief Executive Officer Riyaz Sangani said the project highlighted the importance of using Sri Lanka’s own resources for long-term energy security.

“Sri Lanka is rich in indigenous renewable resources. Harnessing them is vital for our nation’s energy security. The future depends on recognizing the value of what we have and using it to energize the country,” he said.

Sangani added that this was Vidullanka’s second project this quarter, and two more are set to be commissioned within the year. “That will bring our portfolio to 25 projects in our 25th year of operations,” he noted proudly.

Beyond Sri Lanka, Vidullanka also runs renewable power plants in Uganda and manages two mini-hydro projects in Guyana, further broadening its international footprint.
