COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, August 16, 2025 (ePRESS) – Royal College’s Methvan Wijemanne and St. Bridget’s Convent star Dinara de Silva once again proved that they are head and shoulders above the rest, defending their crowns at the 111th National Tennis Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), powered by YETI, and staged at the SLTA courts in Colombo.

Methvan, cool under pressure and sharp with his groundstrokes, outplayed Ganuka Fernando 6-4, 7-5 in the Boys’ Under-18 singles final. It was a repeat script from last year, when he too toppled Fernando to lift the crown. With this win, the 17-year-old pulled off a back-to-back triumph in the under-18s, adding to his 2023 Under-16 championship. The Royalist is clearly on the fast track, showing the grit, game sense and fighting spirit needed to become a future star in Sri Lankan tennis.

Dinara, meanwhile, was in a class of her own. The graceful shot-maker swept aside Bishop’s College’s Yuhansa Peiris 6-1, 6-2 in the Girls’ Under-18 final, barely breaking a sweat. Her victory marked a remarkable four-peat — titles in 2022, 2023, 2024 and now 2025. Her footwork was lightning quick, her serve rock solid, and her composure unshaken. For four years running, Dinara has kept her rivals chasing shadows, stamping her authority as the undisputed queen of her age group.

The Under-12 battles also kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Revaan Amarasinghe powered past Kashya Seneviratne 6-0, 6-2, while Nuren Wevita held his nerve to beat Yonal Dankumbura 6-3, 6-3. The stage is now set for a mouth-watering boys’ final between Amarasinghe of S. Thomas’ College and Wevita of St. Joseph’s College, a classic Colombo school rivalry moving onto the tennis court.

In the girls’ Under-12 semi-finals, Samaira Fernando of Colombo International School outplayed Taalia Silva 6-3, 6-3, while Sethuli Muthugama of Musaeus College stormed past Sayuri Mututhanthiri 6-1, 6-1. Both now march into the final on Monday, promising a duel that could be a glimpse into the future of women’s tennis in Sri Lanka.
