KATUKURUNDA, Sri Lanka, August 21, 2025 (ePRESS) – Fourteen-year-old Chenuka Caldera of Asian International School created history by becoming Sri Lanka’s youngest 1000cc racing champion when he stormed to victory at the Rotherham Circuit Meet 2025 – Round 1, organised by SLADA at the Katukurunda Racing Track this week.
Riding a powerful BMW M1000, Chenuka produced a masterful performance, outclassing seasoned riders from Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
At just 14 years old, Chenuka Caldera’s ability to ride a 1000cc machine capable of reaching 340 km/h is extraordinary. On the Katukurunda circuit, his bike hits speeds of up to 300 km/h, and the fact that he can control it at those speeds—something many adults struggle with—is truly remarkable. His capacity to withstand such extreme G-forces at such a young age is nothing short of incredible.
After 20 thrilling laps, he crossed the finish line in commanding style to secure the race and capture the coveted Best Rider Trophy in Tarmac racing.
Son of veteran racer Maduranga Caldera, the young prodigy displayed remarkable control, speed, and consistency well beyond his age. His historic victory not only brought honour to Sri Lanka but also placed Asian International School in the spotlight for nurturing a sporting star.
Chenuka broke a seven-year-old record held by Aaron Gunawardena, who won the same title in 2018 at the age of 15. By setting a new benchmark at just 14, he has raised the bar for the next generation of Sri Lankan riders.
“This is a proud moment for Sri Lanka motorsport. Chenuka showed great maturity on the track and proved he can compete against the very best,” organisers said.
His triumph marks a golden chapter in local racing history, positioning him as one of the brightest young talents in the region and a source of pride for his school, Asian International School.
