Sri Lanka’s Venuki Wijesena among top five in Asian artistic swimming

AHMEDABAD, India, October 4 (ePRESS) — Sri Lanka’s sixteen-year-old Venuki Wijesena made history for the country by finishing fifth in Asia in the Women’s Solo Technical Final at the ongoing 11th Asian Aquatics Championship 2025, held at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, India.

Wijesena, the only artistic swimmer representing Sri Lanka at this year’s championship, delivered a graceful and technically strong performance to earn a total of 185.9999 points, securing her place as the fifth-best artistic swimmer in Asia.

Kazakhstan’s Karina Magrupova dominated the event to win the gold medal with an impressive 240.1600 points, while Uzbekistan’s Sabina Makhmudova claimed the silver with 222.1600 points. Another Kazakh swimmer, Yasmina Islamova, took the bronze medal with 204.0066 points.

Singapore’s Rae Rachel narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with 197.8167 points, just ahead of Sri Lanka’s young star Wijesena, who impressed the judges with her poise, balance, and artistry.

At only 16, Wijesena’s performance marks a major breakthrough for Sri Lanka in artistic swimming. She will next compete in her second event Solo Freestyle on Monday, aiming to further improve her continental ranking.
