CEAT Kelani secures global ISO certification for Carbon Reporting

CEAT 1

COLOMBO, Oct. 7 (ePRESS) – CEAT Kelani Holdings has achieved a major milestone in sustainable manufacturing, receiving the ISO 14064-1:2018 certification for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. The recognition follows an independent verification by Control Union Inspections (Pvt) Ltd.

As the manufacturer of half of Sri Lanka’s pneumatic tyres, CEAT Kelani’s certification carries significance for the nation’s industrial sector. The standard confirms the company’s compliance with international best practices in climate management and aligns with Sri Lanka’s national Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) framework.

CEAT Kelani Chief Operating Officer Shamal Gunawardene described the certification as a validation of the company’s climate commitment. “This achievement reflects the seriousness with which we integrate environmental stewardship into every aspect of our business,” he said. “From renewable energy investments to sustainable sourcing and operational efficiency, we are taking decisive steps to reduce our carbon footprint and support Sri Lanka’s climate goals.”

Under the ISO framework, CEAT Kelani quantified emissions across Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (energy-related), and relevant Scope 3 (value chain) categories, adopting the operational control approach. The verification assessed completeness, accuracy, transparency, and consistency, confirming the company’s GHG reporting meets global standards.

The certification builds on CEAT Kelani’s broader sustainability initiatives, including a 2.4 MW solar plant at its Kelaniya facility, generating 59.61 GWh over its lifetime and offsetting 21 per cent of the plant’s grid electricity usage. A further 1 MW rooftop solar project is planned for its Kalutara factory.

Energy efficiency measures, biomass use for boilers, and a structured tree-planting programme adding 1,000 trees across multiple sites are also part of the company’s environmental strategy. CEAT Kelani ensures raw materials are sourced from suppliers committed to the Science Based Targets initiative, aiming to halve carbon emissions by 2030.

To strengthen these efforts, the company has set up an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Council, led by the COO and comprising staff from all functions. The council integrates sustainability into corporate culture, with energy efficiency projects now a key performance indicator.

CEAT Kelani, Sri Lanka’s most valuable tyre brand and highest-selling brand with over 1.2 million tyres sold annually, produces a full range of tyres for passenger cars, SUVs, motorcycles, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and agricultural equipment. About 20 per cent of its output is exported to 16 countries.

Over the past decade, the joint venture has invested more than Rs 8.5 billion in Sri Lanka, with another Rs 4.5 billion planned over the next 18 months, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to the local economy and the country’s transport sector.
