MONZA, Italy, Oct 18 (ePRESS) — Sri Lanka’s motor racing super star Yevan David recorded his name in history on Saturday, becoming the first-ever Sri Lankan to win the Euroformula Open Rookie Championship, after a breathtaking performance in Round 8, Race 2 at Monza.
In an electrifying race decided by the slimmest of margins, Yevan Ranasinghe David missed out on overall victory by just one-thousandth of a second — an agonizing blink that separated him from the top step of the podium. The 18-year-old excelled throughout the race, holding his own against Europe’s finest young drivers in changing track conditions.
Despite narrowly missing the race win, David’s brilliant run sealed the Rookie Championship title, marking a watershed moment for Sri Lankan motorsport history. His precision, composure, and overtaking craft stood out at the iconic Italian circuit known as the “Temple of Speed.”
The day also saw Polish driver Dymek Kicharczck secure the overall Euroformula Open Championship, mathematically clinching the title irrespective of tomorrow’s (Sunday) final race. David’s runner-up finish in Race 2 ensured he remained second in the overall standings, ahead of Korean driver Michael Shin, who sits third.
This achievement caps a remarkable season for David, who has shown steady growth and technical mastery across the European racing calendar. Competing against more experienced and better-funded rivals, the Sri Lankan driver’s breakthrough has been hailed as a major step forward for the island nation’s presence in international motorsport.
Analysts noted David’s exceptional control under pressure and his ability to extract pace from the car in critical moments — qualities that underline his potential for higher categories in single-seater racing.
As the Euroformula Open season nears its conclusion, Yevan David’s Rookie Championship triumph not only highlights his personal excellence but also signals Sri Lanka’s arrival on the global racing map — one-thousandth of a second away from victory, yet a lifetime ahead in achievement.
