Colombo, Jan 5, Fri – Two outstanding swimmers from Asian International School (AIS) have earned spots in the Sri Lanka Women’s National Swimming Squad for 2024. The announcement came after the conclusion of the National Short Course Swimming Championship, as disclosed by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU).
Christina Perumal and Sithuki Yonara, both distinguished athletes from AIS, have earned their places in the Sri Lanka Women’s National Squad, consisting of a total of 19 accomplished swimmers. Perumal, the Girls Senior Division third-place winner at the National Short Course Championship, stands out as a triple gold medalist in the recent event.
Perumal has earned the sixth position in the squad based on FINA points. Her exceptional performance in the 100m Breaststroke event, where she achieved 575 FINA points. Meanwhile, Sithuki Yonara, with 483 FINA points for the 200m Backstroke event, secured the 15th position in the squad.
During the Short Course Nationals, Christina Perumal demonstrated her dominance in three Breaststroke events, clinching three gold medals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m events. Additionally, she secured a bronze medal for her alma mater in the 100m Individual Medley (IM).
Sithuki Yonara, a 15-year-old swimmer, displayed remarkable talent by securing a gold medal in the 800m Freestyle, two silver medals in the 1500 Freestyle and 200m Backstroke, and two bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Backstroke.
The top performers in the 19-member squad include Ganga Senevirathne of Killer Whale Aquatics, securing the highest FINA points (693) for the 100m Backstroke. Hiruki de Silva from Gateway College claimed the second position with 651 FINA points for the 200m Freestyle, and Budapest-based Ramudi Samarakoon secured the third spot with 634 FINA points for the 200m Breaststroke.
The inclusion of Perumal and Yonara in the National Squad adds a bright chapter to the success story of Asian International School’s swimming program, showcasing the remarkable achievements of these young athletes on the national stage.
