Colombo, Jan 21, 6.50PM – The First Capital SSC Open Tennis Tournament unfolded at the SSC Tennis Courts, revealing fresh talents in the world of tennis. The Men’s Open Singles title was claimed by Apna Perera from Ananda College, while Dinara de Silva from St Bridget’s Convent secured the Women’s Open Singles championship in a thrilling tournament held on Sunday.
In a nail-biting match, Apna Perera faced off against Kiran Viravanathan of the British School, ultimately emerging victorious with a 2-1 win. The final scoreline, favoring Perera at 6-3, 6-4, and 6-4, showcased his prowess and control in a fiercely contested three-set encounter.
The Women’s Singles category witnessed the rise of a new champion, as Dinara de Silva of St Bridget’s Convent triumphed over the defending champion Saajida Rasick with a remarkable 2-1 victory. De Silva dominated the court with scores of 7-6, 6-2, and 6-1. Both finalists, Saajida Rasick and Dinara de Silva, honed their talents under the guidance of the Dinesh Kanthan Tennis School.
This victory marked a significant milestone for the 15-year-old Dinara de Silva, securing her third consecutive national-level championship. After clinching last year’s Nationals at the age of 14, she went on to triumph at the Queen’s Club Open Tournament. Now, with her second consecutive title at the First Capital SSC Open, de Silva’s journey in the field of tennis continues to captivate and inspire.
