COLOMBO, January 29 (ePRESS) – Old Benedictine hockey players will come together to relive past glory when the Benedictine Hockey Legends Day is held at the St. Benedict’s College (SBC) Grounds in Kotahena on January 31 Saturday.
The event aims to revive one of the school’s legendary sports by uniting former Benedictine hockey players on one platform. The programme was first planned for November 2025, but was postponed due to a natural disaster.
A mini seven-a-side hockey tournament will be the main attraction, with matches starting at 2.30 pm. The organisers had earlier planned a nine-a-side tournament, but the format was changed due to the high number of participants.
Six teams, made up entirely of former Benedictine hockey players, will take part in the tournament. Around 60 players are expected to participate, with each team consisting of 10 players including substitutes.
First-round matches will be played over 10 minutes, with five minutes per half, while the final is scheduled to be completed by 5.00 pm.
Awards will be presented to the champions, runners-up, best player and best goalkeeper, among others. All participants will also receive certificates and medals.
The Director of St. Benedict’s College, Rev. Bro. Niran Perera, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The draw for the tournament was held last Friday evening at the Old Benedictines Sports Club Pavilion, in the presence of OBSC President Anura De Silva, Hockey Secretary Micheal Fernando, and President of the Hockey Wing Priyadharshan Giridharan.
The team captains representing the six houses are: Cassian House – Anthony Kumar Stanis, Christian House – Pradeep Dassanayake, Camillus House – Anuradha Fernando, Philip House – Drostan Vaz Leo Marianayagam, Claude House – Thilak Fernando, Luke House – Marlon Jacobs.
A social dinner will follow the tournament at the Old Benedictine Lounge.
