Charan Rupesinghe clinches Port City 10km open water crown

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Feb 7 (ePRESS) – Eighteen-year-old Charan Rupesinghe emerged as the champion of the 10km Open Water Sea Swim at the Annual Port City Open Water Swimming Championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), which concluded after two days at Port City Colombo.

Charan, the younger brother of three-time national champion Minagi Rupesinghe, clocked an impressive time of 2 hours 49 minutes and 01 seconds to secure first place, winning the race by a narrow four-second margin.

Methwan Fernando of St Joseph’s College, Colombo finished second with a time of 2:49.05, while RBD Niroshana of Army Sports Club claimed the bronze medal after clocking 2:59.49.

Charan has already built a strong profile in open water swimming. In 2025, he placed inside the top ten at the Swim England National Open Water Championships, competing against some of the best young swimmers in the region.

He also represented Sri Lanka at the World Aquatics World Junior Open Water Championships held in Italy in 2024, gaining valuable international exposure.

Earlier this year, Charan delivered another notable performance at the Singapore National Age Group Championships 2025, where he won the only medal for Sri Lanka in the 400 metres Individual Medley event.
