COLOMBO, July 15 – (ePRESS)  – In a landmark announcement for Sri Lankan sport, Asia Rugby has confirmed that Colombo will host the grand finale of the prestigious Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series 2025, with the final leg scheduled to take place at the historic Racecourse Stadium on October 18 and 19.

The high-stakes tournament will bring together 12 men’s and 12 women’s national teams from across the continent, turning Colombo into the heartbeat of Asian rugby for two days of non-stop, high-speed action. This marks a proud return for Sri Lanka to the top tier of international rugby hosting duties.

“This will be a celebration of sevens rugby, with elite athletes, exciting matches, and passionate fans all coming together in Colombo,” Asia Rugby said in its official statement.

The two-day spectacle, which will serve as the second and final leg of the 2025 Emirates Sevens Series, is expected to draw thousands of fans and showcase some of the region’s finest rugby talent. The first leg is set to take place earlier in the season in another Asian city, before the tournament concludes in Sri Lanka.

This announcement signals a major breakthrough for Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), which has been striving to rebuild its international presence in recent years. Hosting the final leg not only provides the island nation with an opportunity to witness top-tier rugby but also reaffirms its status as a reliable sporting destination in Asia.

The event has received strong backing from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs of Sri Lanka, along with key local partners including National Olympic Committee (NOC) who were instrumental in securing hosting rights.

The Racecourse Stadium, steeped in rugby history, is expected to be packed to capacity as supporters flock to witness the fastest format of the game. With a festival-like atmosphere, cultural performances, and rugby villages around the venue, the final leg promises more than just sport—it will be a full-scale celebration of rugby sevens.

“This will be one of the biggest rugby events ever held in Sri Lanka,” an official from Sri Lanka Rugby said. “We are committed to delivering a world-class experience for teams, fans, and the global rugby community.”

With continental bragging rights and series titles on the line, the competition is expected to be fierce. Traditional powerhouses like Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Kazakhstan are likely to feature, while Sri Lanka’s own national sides will look to use home advantage to impress against Asia’s elite.

The 2025 edition is also expected to play a key role in the build-up to future Olympic qualification events, adding even greater significance to the matches played in Colombo.
