DHAKA, Bangladesh, December 17 (ePRESS) Sri Lanka’s top-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Dhanushan Kumar, opened his campaign with a seven-over-par 79 to sit 14th after the first round of the 39th Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship, which teed off at the Kurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Playing on the par-72 course, the 20-year-old Lankan showed steady control despite tough course conditions and remains well within reach as the four-round championship continues until December 19.

Dhanushan, currently Sri Lanka’s number one amateur, will look to improve his position in the coming rounds as the field of 94 golfers battles for honours in one of South Asia’s leading amateur events.

Sri Lanka’s other representative, Sundaram Dhuwarshan of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, had a difficult opening day and finished 62nd overall after carding a 13-over-par 85.

The opening round was led by Kurmitola Golf Club’s Musawath Shams Zahedee, who returned a fine one-under-par 71 to take the outright lead. Bangladesh’s Abu Bokor Siddik followed in second place with a two-over-par 74, while Abdul Kader and Md. Hossain Joy shared third position on three-over-par 75s.
