Colombo, Sri Lanka, January 5 Monday (ePRESS) – Sri Lankan boxing icon Dian Gomes took centre stage as the Ceylon Boxing Federation (CBF) officially launched its new website, www.ceylonboxingfederation.lk , at a grand ceremony held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo last week.
Gomes, who serves as a Board Director of the Asian Boxing Confederation and a director of the International Boxing Association, praised the initiative as a major step forward for Sri Lankan boxing. He said the move showed strong respect for boxing legends and the welfare of those who served the sport for many years.
“This is a great initiative. For the first time, the Ceylon Boxing Federation has come forward in a very strong way to recognise our boxing legends and to look after their welfare. I am totally proud and very happy about what they are doing,” Gomes, who produced Olympic boxers during tenure as BASL President said.
He stressed the importance of the new website for young boxers, saying it will give them better exposure and new opportunities. Gomes noted that boxing alone does not always offer long-term stability, but proper organisation can open doors to jobs, sponsorships and support from the business sector.
“Having a website gives good exposure to young boxers. When an organisation takes care of you, it can help you move forward, sometimes into the mercantile sector or sponsorships. I fully support this effort,” he added.
A former president of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, Gomes attended as the chief guest, underlining Sri Lanka’s growing respect in regional and global boxing administration.
The event was held under the leadership of CBF President Dushantha Kiriella and brought together around 150 veteran boxers from across the island. Their presence turned the ceremony into a proud reunion of champions who shaped the nation’s boxing history.
The CBF said the launch of the website will improve communication, protect the rich legacy of Sri Lankan boxing and support new fundraising programmes aimed at the welfare and wellbeing of veteran boxers.
