COLOMBO, Apr 12 (ePRESS) – From factory floors in Bangladesh to boardrooms in Sri Lanka, Dushantha Kiriella has turned quiet diplomacy into real action, using sport and service to bring people together and open new doors of friendship between the two nations.

In a world often divided, Kiriella is cutting through the noise, proving that actions speak louder than words. His journey with the SUNFO Global Federation reads like a long innings played with patience and purpose, where every run counts towards peace, cooperation and human development.

Founded in 1999, SUNFO has been a steady hand in promoting harmony and global understanding. From backing the Millennium Development Goals to now supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, the movement has touched over a million lives. Into this field stepped Kiriella in 2010, not just to take part, but to make a difference.

A seasoned professional in the garment sector, Kiriella had already built strong ties in Bangladesh over decades. But instead of resting on his network, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work. Like a captain rallying his team, he brought together like-minded people and helped build the SUNFO Cooperative Alliance in Bangladesh, strengthening people-to-people links.

His efforts did not go unnoticed. Kiriella was appointed SUNFO Goodwill Ambassador for Bangladesh, a role in which he became a bridge-builder across borders. He represented SUNFO in forums and workshops across South Asia, carrying Sri Lanka’s message of unity and cooperation wherever he went.

Kiriella’s vision packs a punch in regional cooperation

Back home, he helped organise events marking Bangladesh’s National Day, bringing together diplomats, youth and communities. These gatherings were more than ceremonies—they were platforms where friendships were forged and understanding deepened.

Kiriella’s work also reached those at the grassroots. Through SUNFO, he supported children and youth with computers, education and opportunities. For many, these small steps opened big doors, giving them a chance to dream and move forward.

Recognition followed naturally. His dedication earned him several honours, including titles such as Sustainability Governor and John Baptist Cross World Fellow. Yet, those close to him say he wears these accolades lightly, choosing instead to stay focused on the next challenge.

A former boxer from his younger days, Kiriella has now come full circle as President of the Ceylon Boxing Federation. Here too, he is thinking outside the ring.

He is planning to use boxing as a tool for diplomacy, aiming to strengthen ties between Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other nations through sport. It is a bold vision—turning punches into partnerships and bouts into bridges.

As the saying goes, he is not just thinking outside the box, but stepping into the ring with purpose. In a fast-changing world, Dushantha Kiriella’s story shows that one person, with the right mindset, can connect communities, inspire youth and keep the flame of friendship alive.

For him, the final bell has not rung yet. The fight for unity, cooperation and opportunity continues—and he is still very much in the game.
