BAMBALAPITIYA: (ePRESS) – Holy Family Convent (HFC) Bambalapitiya has made history in school basketball by winning the Under-20 All Island School Basketball Championship for four years in a row. In an exciting match held at the HFC courts in Bambalapitiya yesterday, HFC emerged victorious over Good Shepherd Convent Kotahena with a final score of 58-49.
Led by Kawya Riyal, HFC scored 58 points, securing the title against Good Shepherd, captained by Sonali Perera, scored 49 points. At halftime, Good Shepherd was leading by 21-23, but HFC turned the game around in the second half.
In the first quarter, Holy Family Convent had a slight lead of 9-8, but they fell behind at halftime with a score of 23-21 in favor of Good Shepherd. However, in the third quarter, HFC took the lead with a score of 41-34.
Dihini Dharmadasa of HFC was named the Best Player of the final and the Best Player of the Tournament, scoring an impressive 32 points in the final match. Binuthi Jayasinghe, also from HFC, was awarded the title of Best Defensive Player for her outstanding performance, contributing 10 points in the final. Sonali Perera, captain of Good Shepherd, was recognized as the Best Offensive Player, scoring 14 points for her team, the runners-up.
In the battle for third place, St. Joseph’s Girls School Nugegoda defeated Lyceum International School Wattala with a score of 40-28, leading 18-12 at halftime. This victory secured the third-place position for St. Joseph’s.
Since 2008, the Holy Family Convent (HFC) basketball team has been under the guidance of coaches Shane Daniel and Randima Sooriyarachchi. Their coaching has been instrumental in the team’s success, leading HFC to victory in 18 All Island Championships since then. With their expert coaching and the dedication of the players, HFC has established itself as a dominant force in school basketball, consistently performing at the highest level year after year.
