COLOMBO, Feb 27 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s Suresh Dharmasena stormed into the final with clinical precision, while Gamini Dissanayake fell just short after a courageous three-set battle, as the two Lankan stars produced contrasting performances at the ITF UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour Sri Lanka Open played at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts in Colombo.
Dharmasena delivered a near-flawless display in the Men’s Open Singles semi-final, brushing aside South Korea’s Sung Bon Han 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets. The Sri Lankan ace controlled the baseline with deep, measured returns and sharp cross-court angles. His first-serve percentage remained high, and he converted key break points with calm efficiency. From the opening game, Dharmasena dictated the tempo, breaking early in both sets and never allowing his opponent to settle into rhythm.
Statistically, Dharmasena maintained strong court coverage and minimized unforced errors. His shot selection was calculated, forcing Han into defensive positions and capitalizing on short returns. It was a performance built on discipline, balance, and tactical awareness.
In contrast, Dissanayake’s semi-final was a test of endurance and mental strength. Facing China’s Xiaomin Feng, he lost the opening set 6-3 after struggling to contain Feng’s aggressive forehand. However, the Sri Lankan fought back with grit in the second set. He held serve under pressure and edged a tense tie-break 7-6, showing remarkable composure in crucial moments.
The deciding set turned into a battle of fine margins. Both players exchanged breaks, but Feng kept his nerve in the closing stages to seal the set 6-4. Dissanayake’s resilience was clear, yet a few critical points slipped away at key junctures, ultimately denying Sri Lanka an all-Lankan final.
Dharmasena will now face Feng in today’s final, aiming to bring the title home. With momentum on his side and the backing of local supporters, the experienced campaigner stands one match away from crowning a strong and scientifically disciplined campaign with silverware.
