BAHRAIN, October 23 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s Janidu Dhananjaya advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s 50kg flyweight category at the 3rd Asian Youth Games, defeating Bangladesh’s Asadullah Md Ali 3-2 in a closely contested three-round bout in Bahrain.
Dhananjaya edged the first round 3-2 with precise jabs and effective counter-punching, narrowly lost the second round 2-3 as his opponent found openings, but came back strongly in the final round, winning 3-2 with superior combinations to seal the victory.
With this win, Dhananjaya will face Tajikistan in the quarterfinals on Saturday, October 25.
Sri Lanka’s boxing team will compete again October 24 Friday, when Binul Dulnada steps into the ring in the 46kg light-flyweight category against Chinese Taipei at around 7.30pm Sri Lanka time.
For this year’s Asian Youth Games, Sri Lanka has fielded two boxers: Janidu Dhananjaya of Vithyarathna University College, Horana, coached by Amila Aravinda Tissera, and Binul Dulnada.
