COLOMBO, Apr 12 (ePRESS) – The Jayasinghe siblings, Methika Jayasinghe and Binuthi Jayasinghe, emerged as the biggest winners at the All-Island Under-20 Basketball Championship, clinching titles and Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards as their teams secured victories at the tournament held from April 8 to 11 in Colombo — also marking the first time in the history of Sri Lanka basketball that siblings have achieved both championship titles and MVP honours at the same event.
The four-day championship, which brought together the country’s top young basketball talent, ended with the girls’ final on April 10 and the boys’ final on April 11, producing two standout performances from the same family.
In the boys’ final, Methika led from the front as captain of St. Joseph’s College Colombo. He guided his side to a convincing win with a composed and consistent display, earning the MVP honour for his all-round impact on the game.
Methika’s triumph also extended his remarkable record in school basketball, as he maintained an unbeaten run in championships across his age groups.
Turning heads in the girls’ final, Binuthi, the under-17 player, representing Holy Family Convent Colombo, powered her team to victory with a match-winning 25-point performance, dominated the game against older opponents to seal both the title and the MVP award.
Both players also served as Youth Captains of their teams. Their double success — winning championships and individual MVP awards — marked a rare and memorable moment in the history of basketball in Sri Lanka.
