VICTORIA GOLF RESORT, Digana, Kandy, July 9, 2025 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s number one junior golfer, Reshan Algama, kept his nerve and stayed on top at the halfway mark of the Sri Lanka Golf Ranking Tournament, played at the beautiful but difficult Victoria Golf Resort in Digana, Kandy on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old Colombo International Schoolboy, already known in local golfing circles for his smooth swing and clever course management, played a steady round of even par 73 on the second day. This gave him a total score of 144 after two rounds. It wasn’t an easy day for scoring, but Algama avoided big mistakes and showed great patience on a tricky course.
Just behind him, only two shots away, is Kumara Dhanushan, who produced the best round of the day — a brilliant 3-under-par 70. Dhanushan started the day five shots behind Algama, but his attacking golf and fine putting helped him close the gap. It has now set up a mouth-watering battle between young talent and experience over the final two days.
In third place is experienced golfer Vijitha Bandara, who followed his opening 73 with a 74, for a two-round total of 147. Bandara, one of the professionals in the tournament, stayed solid and remains in a good position to challenge for the title.
Further down the leaderboard, Sri Lanka Navy’s Chalitha Pushpika, currently the country’s highest-ranked amateur in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), shot a 77. His total of 153 keeps him outside the top ten for now. Pushpika, famous for his long drives and fighting spirit, will need to bounce back strongly in the next two rounds if he hopes to catch the leaders.
Uchitha Ranasinghe just managed to make the cut with a total score of 167 after two days. With the weaker players now out, the battle is expected to heat up as the top golfers fight for every shot in the coming rounds.
