COLOMBO, January 5, Monday (ePRESS) – Former Sri Lanka centre Kapila Knowlton has been appointed Chairman of the five-member Sri Lanka Rugby Selection Committee, Sri Lanka Rugby announced on January 1 Thursday. The appointment has been approved by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Knowlton, an outstanding former player of Mahanama College Rugby, Army Sports Club and Sri Lanka, brings strong experience as a player and leader. He represented Mahanama College in the early 1990s before joining Army SC in 1994. He later captained the Soldiers in 1999 under New Zealand coach Kelvin Karrington.
Knowlton played for Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2008 and represented the country at the Hong Kong Sevens in 2008. He also played a key role in Army SC’s rise to the Clifford Cup finals in 2001 and 2002.
The selection panel also includes former Trinity College Rugby, CR and FC and Kandy Sports Club second-row forward Duminda de Silva, a versatile sportsman who also represented basketball and mixed netball.
Former St Anthony’s College Rugby, CH and FC and Sri Lanka centre Jude Pillai has also been named to the panel.
The other members are former Zahira College Rugby, CR and FC and Sri Lanka Sevens player Mohomed Mushtaq, and women’s rugby representative Rukshani Ariyasena from Eheliyagoda.
Sri Lanka Rugby said the new selection committee brings together experience from school, club, sevens and women’s rugby, with the aim of strengthening national team selections in the seasons ahead.
