COLOMBO, Oct 18 (ePRESS) – Sri Lankan maritime professional Maleena Awn, a graduate of Cardiff University and Director of Operations at Meridian Maritime Services Ltd, has brought pride to Sri Lanka by being named one of the winners of Cardiff University’s prestigious 2025 30(ish) Awards, which celebrate alumni making a positive impact before they reach 30 — or “30(ish)”.

Maleena was recognised in the Equity Advocate category for her remarkable work in driving maritime equity and empowering young women through leadership and advocacy — a field still largely dominated by men across the world. Her recognition places her among a select group of world change-makers and highlights the growing influence of Sri Lankan professionals.

Now in its fourth year, the 30(ish) Awards honour Cardiff graduates who are innovators, leaders, and social impact pioneers. This year, the university received over 200 nominations, reflecting the exceptional diversity and reach of its alumni network.

Winners will return to Cardiff in October to receive their awards at a ceremony hosted by the University’s Vice Chancellor, with BBC Radio 1 presenters Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston — both past award winners — serving as emcees.

She made history as the first female Chairperson of YoungShip Sri Lanka and later became the first Sri Lankan appointed to the board of YoungShip International, a worldwide organisation that connects and develops young professionals in shipping. Today, she serves as Vice President of WISTA Sri Lanka, the local chapter of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association, where she continues to advocate for gender equality in maritime careers.

Her achievements have been widely recognised both locally and internationally. She was previously named among Global Shipping’s “10 Women to Watch in 2025”, an honour reserved for women shaping the future of the maritime industry. During her academic years at Cardiff University, she also received the Yusen Award in 2016 and the Sir Julian Hodge Prize for Maritime Studies and International Transport in 2017, reflecting her consistent excellence and commitment to the field.

Beyond titles and awards, what makes Maleena stand out is her vision — to build a more inclusive maritime industry where women have equal opportunities to lead and contribute. Through mentoring, advocacy, and her own example, she continues to inspire a new generation of women to navigate their way to success in global shipping.
