Colombo, Jan 23, 4.45Pm – Sri Lanka’s tennis scene is buzzing with excitement as Methvan Wijemanne, Vichinthaya Nilaweera, Gehansa Methnadi, and Dinara de Silva clinched victories in their respective Singles events at the ongoing ITF Junior Circuit First Round Tournament. The tournament, organized by the International Tennis Federation, is taking place at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay courts in Colombo from January 22 to 28.
Methvan Wijemanne delivered a commanding performance, securing a 2-0 victory over Kyungone Kim from Korea. The Royal College tennis star dominated with a score of 6/2 6/1, showcasing skill and determination.
Vichinthaya Nilaweera faced a challenging match against Muyou Zou from China but emerged victorious with a score of 3/6 6/4 3/1, as Muyou retired during the game.
In the Girls category, Dinara de Silava displayed her potential by defeating Disha Kumav from India with a score of 6/3 6/1. Meanwhile, Gehansa Methnadi secured a solid victory against Vaivya Srivastra from India, finishing with a score of 6/3 6/3.
However, not all local players advanced to the next round. Inuki Jayaweera, Aroshi Thomas, Ivanka Samarasinghe, Venuli Jayasinghe, and Nesangi Hemakumara faced tough competition and unfortunately bowed out in the 1st Round.
In the boys category, players Ganuka Fernando, Lithium Jayabandu, Ahil Kaleel, and Lisal Goonethileke also couldn’t secure victories in the 1st Round. Despite the challenges, the tournament continues to showcase the talent and determination of Sri Lanka’s young tennis stars.
