COLOMBO, January 12, Monday (ePRESS) – Young siblings Bassam Murthasa and Maryam Murthasa emerged as the standout performers at the Sri Lanka Muay Thai National Championship 2026, delivering gold-medal wins and Best Fighter Awards at the five-day championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Muay Thai Federation, was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from January 4 to 8.
Representing IMA – Sri Lanka, Bassam Murthasa once again showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young athletes. The World Youth Ambassador for the International Federation of Muay Thai Associations (IFMA) won the 12–13 age category gold medal and claimed the Best Fighter Award, marking his third consecutive national gold with the same top honour.
Maryam Murthasa matched her younger brother’s impact with an equally commanding display in the 16–17 age category. She secured the gold medal and the Best Fighter Award, confirming her status as one of the leading youth fighters in the country. Her bouts reflected strong ring awareness, balance, and confidence under pressure, traits increasingly valued at elite level Muay Thai.
The family success story was completed by the youngest sibling, Imad Murthasa, who earned a silver medal in the 10–11 age category, adding further depth to the Murthasa presence at the championship.
The event brought together around 450 athletes from 35 clubs across the island, competing in a wide range of age and weight categories. The participation of elite teams from the Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy lifted the overall standard, creating a tough and disciplined competitive environment for young and senior fighters alike.
