New Star’s ruthless attack shakes Champions League

COLOMBO, January 5 Monday (ePRESS) – New Star Sports Club underlined their growing dominance in the Sri Lanka Champions League with a ruthless 6-0 win over Crystal Palace Sports Club at the Colombo Racecourse Stadium on Sunday, moving clear at the top of the points table with a perfect record.

New Star Sports Club have now played four matches, won all four, scored an impressive 19 goals and conceded just one. Their balance between attack and defence has made them the most efficient team in the competition so far.

New Star took control early against Crystal Palace Sports Club, with Mohamed Atheef striking in only the second minute to give his side a 1-0 lead at half-time. The early goal allowed New Star to settle quickly and dictate the tempo of the game.

The second half turned into a one-sided display. Mohamed Thilam and Togo international Afro Tognebel both scored twice, using pace and sharp movement to break down a tiring defence. Mohamed Fazal added another goal to complete the rout. Fazal also leads the scoring charts in Group A with five goals, highlighting New Star’s strength through the middle of the park.

In Group A standings, Serendib Sports Club sit second with nine points from four matches, having won three and lost one.

Group B is led by Pelicans Sports Club Kurunegala with seven points from three games, following two wins and one draw. Sri Lanka Police Sports Club are close behind in second place with six points from four matches.

Defending champions Matara City returned to winning form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Super Sun. Andrews Nana and Afeil Yusup scored for Matara City, while Nigerian forward Ismaila Abumare replied for Super Sun.

The biggest upset of the weekend came when Moragasmulla Sports Club shocked Police SC with a 1-0 win. Playing without any foreign players, Moragasmulla showed strong discipline and belief, with Mohamed Katheem scoring the decisive goal.
