Reshan Algama one step away from glory in Digana

Reshan Algama 17

DIGANA, Kandy, July 10, 2025 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s number one junior golfer Reshan Algama produced another masterclass in calm and steady golf to stay on top of the leaderboard after the third round of the Sri Lanka Golf July Ranking Tournament at the beautiful but challenging Victoria Golf Resort in Digana on Thursday.

The 17-year-old from Royal Colombo Golf Club, who is known for his sharp focus and smooth swing, fired an impressive two-under-par 71. With this, he increased his total score to 215 over three days, tightening his grip at the top of the standings as the tournament heads into its final and most important round.

The real excitement came when Haroon Aslam turned the course into his stage. Haroon, who was not among the leaders before, played a stunning round of four-under-par 69 — the best score of the tournament so far. His excellent back nine was full of powerful iron shots and bold putts that brought loud applause from the crowd. Haroon’s score lifted him to second place with a total of 220, just five strokes behind Algama.

Even though Haroon’s brilliant round stole the spotlight, Algama quietly and smartly went about his business. With earlier rounds of 71 and 73, the young star once again showed maturity beyond his years. His game was controlled and clean, avoiding big mistakes while collecting birdies on the tough Victoria course, where fast greens and strong winds tested every player.

It was a tough day for K. Danushan, who had started the day in second place. He struggled with a round of 76 and dropped to third position with a total score of 222. A few loose shots on the front nine hurt his chances, and he now faces a difficult task to catch up in the final round.

Navy veteran and Sri Lanka’s top-ranked amateur golfer Vijitha Bandara showed improvement with a one-over 74 to bring his total to 231. Meanwhile, Uchitha Ranasinghe — the country’s second-best ranked amateur internationally — fought hard for a three-over 76 on a tricky day where swirling winds and speedy greens troubled many players.

Now, all eyes turn to today’s final round. Haroon is playing fearless golf, Danushan will be hoping to recover, but the story of the tournament remains Reshan Algama. If the teenage sensation holds his lead, it will mark another proud moment in what is already a shining year for the rising star of Sri Lankan golf.
