Colombo, Jan 21, 11.30AM – Reshan Algama, Sri Lanka’s rising golf star, recently claimed the title of the country’s highest-ranked global player, marking a historic achievement in the field of golf. In an exclusive statement, Algama expressed his joy, emphasizing that winning the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) championship in 2023 stands out as the highlight of his burgeoning career.
“In 2023, I won the Royal Colombo Golf Club championship, and it was one of the best memories I had in playing golf. I hope to make my country proud and continue to perform well, earning valuable points for Sri Lanka,” shared Algama, who, at just 15 years old, became the youngest golfer to achieve such a global accolade.
Reshan Algama’s stellar performance at the Srixon RCGC Championship catapulted him to the top of the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), a prestigious recognition issued by the world governing body. With a record-breaking victory, Algama secured the 605th place globally, leading by a significant margin with 110 points over the second-ranked player, Chanaka Perera, positioned at 715 in the WAGR leaderboard for 2023.
Noteworthy contenders behind Algama include Uchitha Ranasinghe (996), Chalith Pushpika (1062), and Haroon Aslama (1452). Algama’s consistency and exceptional achievements have set a new standard for golf in Sri Lanka.
A student at the Colombo International School (CIS), Algama began his golfing journey a decade ago at the tender age of five. Reflecting on his early experiences, he stated, “I started playing golf at the age of five, about 10 years ago. It was very interesting at first. It’s an individual sport, and I could focus on myself without having to worry about other teammates as I forged my own career.”
Algama fondly reminisced about his initial tournament success, saying, “I remember coming third in my first-ever tournament. From that point onward, all I wanted to do was perform well.” His dedication is evident in achieving previously highest WAGR spot at 584, displaying the promising trajectory of Algama’s golfing journey.
