COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Methvan Wijemanne of Royal College clinched the Under-18 Boys Singles title at the 109th National Tennis Championship, held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts in Greenpath.

Wijemanne defeated Ganuka Fernando of St. Peter’s College in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to secure the prestigious title.

This victory echoes the success of Methvan’s father, Sanjay Wijemanne, a former Royal College and Sri Lanka Davis Cup champion, who also won this title back in 1989.

Methvan, trained by coach Dinesh Kanthan Thangaraja, who himself won the Under-18 Junior Championship in 2009, continues to build on a strong tennis career.

Last year, Methvan captured the Under-16 Singles and Doubles titles and has also won Under-18 Doubles titles.

In the Girls Under-18 semi-finals, defending champion Dinara de Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent advanced to the finals by easily overcoming Oneli Samarawickrama of Newstead College with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

Nesangi Hemakumara of Elizabeth Moir School also secured her place in the final, defeating Hasali Gajaba of Visakha Vidyalaya with a tight scoreline of 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
