COLOMBO, Aug 12, 2025 (ePRESS) – Veteran high net worth investor Indra Silva and leading conglomerate MetroCorp have picked up fresh stakes in National Development Bank PLC (NDB), in a transaction that stirred the Colombo bourse on Tuesday.
Silva acquired 4.09%, while MetroCorp bought 2.58%, taking MetroCorp’s overall holding in the bank to 4.7%. The seller was Softlogic Life Insurance Funds, which disposed of 31.7 million shares at Rs.139 each, amounting to a deal worth Rs.4.4 billion.
Silva, one of Colombo’s most seasoned investors, is known for his preference for banking stocks. He already owns 9.98% each in Commercial Bank and Sampath Bank, along with 2.69% in Hatton National Bank (HNB).
MetroCorp, headed by chairman Dinesh Ambani, is an active institutional investor in the Colombo Stock Exchange. The group already holds 9.2% of non-voting shares in HNB and has interests spanning the full agro value chain, renewable energy, IT, office automation, digitalisation, infrastructure, and building services.
The latest entry by Silva and MetroCorp highlights continuing confidence in Sri Lanka’s banking sector, which remains one of the most attractive areas for long-term investors.
