Colombo, Mar 4, 2.15PM – Royal College’s Matheesha Wijesekara and Adithi Gunasekara from Ladies’ College shone brightly at the Fingara Junior Open Squash Tournament in Colombo, organized by Sri Lanka Squash and sponsored by Fingara Town and Country Club.
Matheesha Wijesekara, a rising star from Royal College, amazed everyone by clinching the Under-19 Boys Championship. Despite falling ill during the Under-17 finals and finishing as the runner-up, Wijesekara bounced back magnificently to secure the Under-19 title, defeating Tharul Pinwatta of Royal College in a thrilling match.
On the Girls’ side, Adithi Gunasekara of Ladies’ College displayed her prowess by clinching both the Under-19 and Under-17 Championship titles. In the Under-19 category, she triumphed over the experienced Anargi Perra of Visakha Vidyalaya, securing the Girls’ Under-19 title. Gunasekara had alredy dominated winning the Under-17 Championship against Akeesha Samaranayake of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya.
A noteworthy showdown happened in the Under-15 Boys category between Gateway College’s Champion Manuth Dassanayake and Runner-up Bihandu Nanayakkara. Both players, rising stars from Gateway College, have consistently excelled in their respective age groups from a young age.
Sri Lanka Squash President Dhammika Wijesundara expressed gratitude to Fingara Club for their support, stating, “After a long period, Fingara Club has stepped forward to support squash. It’s a pleasure for us as the Federation.” He added, “Fingara Club has changed with new management, and I wish them good luck. Importantly, Fingara Club has agreed to host and sponsor this as an annual event, bringing us great joy.”
The Fingara Junior Open Squash Tournament, with its exciting matches and emerging talents, marks a significant chapter in Sri Lanka’s squash scene, thanks to the support and commitment of Fingara Club.
