Colombo, Feb 22, 6.15PM – Sri Lanka Athletics is getting set for its first national track and field competition of the year. The event, named Sri Lanka Open Stage I will serve as a selection trial for the Asian Junior Athletic Championship and a platform for improving world rankings. It is set to take place at Diyagama in Homagama on March 1 and 2.
This two-day competition falls under the World Athletic Category ‘E.’ It aims to provide local athletes with an opportunity to earn world ranking points. These points will be crucial for the final selection process for the Asian Junior (Under-20) Athletic Championship in Dubai, scheduled for April this year.
The competition welcomes both senior and junior athletes, including those in the National Pool and National High-Performance Programme. Sri Lanka Athletics anticipates the participation of approximately 1,000 athletes in this important event. Beyond serving as a pathway for Olympic qualification, the competition presents a valuable opportunity for junior athletes to secure spots for the Asian Junior Athletic Championship in Dubai.
