KATUNAYAKA, Sri Lanka, Aug 3, 2025 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka on Sunday launched a special 24/7 counter at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to convert valid foreign driving licences into Sri Lankan licences, making life easier for tourists, foreign residents, and business travellers.

The new Foreign Driving Licence Conversion Counter, set up at the airport’s arrival terminal, is a joint project by the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), the Ministry of Transport and Highways, and Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.

Transport Minister led the ceremonial opening, which was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and airport authorities.

“This is a major step in modernising our public service delivery. Foreigners no longer need to waste time visiting multiple offices. They can now convert their licences right at the airport,” a senior DMT official said.

The counter will operate round the clock and offer services in multiple languages. It includes facilities for biometric data capture and same-day issuance of temporary or regular driving licences for eligible applicants.

Officials say the new system will be fast, user-friendly, and transparent, helping Sri Lanka improve its global image as a travel- and business-friendly destination.

This initiative is part of a broader public sector transformation plan led by the DMT to improve access to government services and bring them in line with international standards.
