COLOMBO, Apr 7 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka will make history as Isiwaruna Oshada De Silva and Sachini Nisansala Rathnathilaka lead the country’s first-ever full team appearance at the UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup, set to take place from April 8 to 12 at the Cairo International Stadium Complex in Egypt.

This landmark entry marks a major step forward for modern pentathlon in Sri Lanka, a sport that has developed rapidly in recent years despite limited resources. Competing at an international event for the first time as a complete team signals the country’s growing presence in the international arena.

The squad will also include Gayani Kumudu Kumari Dasanayake, while Iroshan Sampath Kumara will serve as the team official, providing guidance and support as the athletes face elite-level competition for the first time.

Modern pentathlon is one of the toughest Olympic sports, combining fencing, swimming, obstacle course racing, shooting and running. It demands high endurance, sharp technique and strong mental focus across multiple events, testing athletes in every aspect of performance.

Sri Lanka earned its place at the World Cup following encouraging performances at recent Asian competitions, where the athletes showed steady progress and the ability to challenge stronger opponents in the region.

From humble beginnings with limited facilities, the sport has grown into a structured programme within just eight years. The athletes’ rise has been driven by determination, discipline and consistent training under challenging conditions.

The team will compete under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Modern Pentathlon Federation, with added support from the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation, which has provided training facilities and accommodation ahead of the event.
