COLOMBO, Aug 29 (ePRESS) – The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) today issued a new Rs. 2000 commemorative currency note to mark its 75th anniversary, under the theme “Stability for Prosperity.”

This is the fifth commemorative note issued by the Central Bank since its establishment in 1950, and it will circulate as legal tender across the country.

Earlier in the day, CBSL Governor Dr. P. Nandalal Weerasinghe officially presented the first note to President and Finance Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.

The limited-edition note, with only 50 million pieces printed, will gradually be released into circulation through licensed commercial banks.

The front of the note carries the image of the CBSL Head Office and the Colombo Lighthouse Clock Tower, alongside a stylised skyline of modern Colombo and the 75th anniversary logo. A colour-shifting security thread enhances protection against counterfeiting, while six raised bars with diamond shapes on both sides help visually impaired people identify the note by touch.

On the reverse, the design includes a stylised map of Sri Lanka, a water lily, and the Central Bank’s vision statement, symbolising economic resilience and progress.

CBSL said the note reflects its mission to safeguard financial stability as the foundation for national growth and development.
