Western Province Rugby names new president and officials

COLOMBO, February 2 (ePRESS) – The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) ushered in a new leadership team when Roshan Deen was elected President at its Annual General Meeting held at the Havelock Sports Club on Thursday, with veteran rugby administrator Rizly Illyas appointed Patron in a key move aimed at strengthening provincial rugby.

Former Presidents Wimal Senanayake and Fazal Mohamed were also honoured and recognised as Past Presidents, underlining the Union’s respect for experience and continuity.

Varuna de Silva was elected Deputy President, while Sen. Wi. Chang and Shamrath Fernando will serve as Vice Presidents for the new term. Rushan Hameed was appointed Secretary, with Nalin Thabeeth taking over as Assistant Secretary.

The Union’s financial responsibilities will be handled by Nazeem Ghaffor as Treasurer, assisted by Sameera Wijegooneratne, as the WPRFU looks to maintain stability and transparency in its administration.

Strengthening inclusivity and development, Sagarika Kulatunga was appointed Women’s Rugby Representative, while Ushan Weerasena will oversee Schools Rugby, a vital area for the future growth of the game in the Western Province.

The newly elected officials are expected to focus on player development, women’s rugby, schools competitions and the overall progress of club rugby in the province during their term.
